We had a much needed shower this morning

Cantering in single file

It’s an overcast morning and we have had a short sharp rain shower, very similar to yesterday. Thunderstorms are forecast and let’s hope we get a good one as the ground certainly needs it once again. It is hectic in the yard today.  With plenty of visitors, the sales later on this morning - where we have three going through the ring - and the second day of the July meeting, the town is full of people and cars. You always know when there is something going on as the high street is gridlocked.

Prosecutor leading

The bookmakers continue to be very evasive over Frankie Dettori’s rides this week and any accumulators on the jockey’s rides are being adjusted with starting prices only on the final legs. Why bookmakers are allowed to get away with this I don’t know and I agree fully with Matt Chapman who was having a go at them on the TV the other day. I think the whole of the bookmaking industry should be looked into and, whether on course or internet, should have rules that are fair to both sides but, at present it seems to me that the bookmakers make up their own rules as they go on.

In Australia, Racing Victoria has just announced A$100 million as prize money and bonuses for their Spring Carnival. This is equivalent to £55.5 million pounds which is an unbelievable amount for one section of the Australian industry. No wonder owners are encouraged to have horses in training as they have a chance of getting a good return. Our pathetic Levy pales in comparison. The sooner our leaders understand the problem here the better but it makes you wonder.
