"If you don’t have time to do it right you must have time to do it over."Anon.
After the weekends heatwave it is very pleasant this morning with high thick clouds and short periods of sunshine. There is a very good breeze which is keeping everything feeling fresher. We are a bit light on the ground this morning with staff but everything has been getting out, just not quite how I would have liked it. Another yardman plus a rider would be handy. It is supposed to be stable staff week at present which is a good idea.
Our runners on Saturday were not too disappointing as we found out that Roof Garden certainly doesn’t stay. Given a very good ride by Dougie Costello we will be back to a mile or a mile two with him. The filly, Velvet Vision, wants soft ground and at least a mile and a half. Once again the jockey made it look easy on her as she pulled hard last time and had no chance. We will be having a couple of runners this week, one on Thursday and one on Friday.
Once again the Irish Derby was a one, two, three for the Coolmore operation, who are an absolutely brilliant outfit. It may not have been the finishing order everybody was expecting, but the winner kept going and finished very well. These Galileo’s like fast ground, they stay and they try. We also saw an exciting two-year-old in Siskin who won the Railway Stakes in very easy style. He is by First Defence who my friend in Saudi Arabia bought last year and is now sitting pretty with the top class sire for them to go to war with.
Another one of our ex inmates has started to perform in the show ring. Astromajor, who is now with Janine Palmer, won his first rosette at his first show the other day. He had contracted tendons as a foal and had to wear splints for a considerable length of time. It was a miracle to get him on the track but he did run a few times and a better natured horse you will never find. He has found a brilliant home with Janine and it just goes to show that these retired racehorses can give so much pleasure when they are rehomed.
