Onwards and upwards ...

We have one runner today at Lingfield

"Keep your fears to yourself but share your courage with others."

Robert Louis Stevenson.

There was a big full moon last night and if you know what a poacher is, it would have been an ideal night to go out on the prowl. The morning has brought a most marvellous sunrise and along with the early morning mist made for the perfect setting while cantering on the Rubbing House Polytrack. All has gone well so far and everybody is in and working well. The weather looks set fair for the rest of the week and although it won’t dry as quickly as mid-summer, the ground will soon start to firm up. At least we are getting a good dew overnight which gives the grass a drink.

Cantering on the Rubbing House Polytrack

We have one runner today. Astrofire steps up markedly in trip when she runs in the 3.10 at Lingfield. This looks an interesting little race with the favourite going for a four timer. Astrofire has not shown much as yet, but this trip may well suit and we have a very good pilot in David Egan.

I wonder where that has been

I now see we have the Racecourse Association chairman saying we need to help the bookmakers to boost betting on our sport. They, along with the BHA, are asking for more money as they consider that they will be losing £40 – £60 million when the machines are cut in the betting shops. Well what a great way to run a business, dependant on slot machines to keep us going. The powers that be have constantly expanded our fixture list putting huge pressure on our staff and the horses, all to give massive profits to the bookmakers and now they are crying wolf because the shops are going to shut. I don’t think this will be the case as I am sure the machines will still remain high income for the high street bookmakers. We should be concentrating on promoting racing to new and established owners to keep the show on the road.
